1972 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 4 May 2009)

In 1972, Dr. Robert L. Shipp, who completed his FSU Ph.D. under the direction of Dr. Ralph W. Yerger, named a species of fish, Sphoeroides yergeri (the speckled puffer), in Dr. Yerger's honor.

On 10 July 1972, the first issue of BioNotes appeared. This weekly listing of announcements has become a tradition of the department.

Dr. Henry M. Stevenson was appointed founding editor of the journal to be published twice yearly by the newly established Florida Ornithological Society.

Dr. David C. White was chosen by the American Society for Microbiology to serve as a Foundation for Microbiology Lecturer for 1972-73.

Dr. Ralph W. Yerger was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Highlands Biological Station, Highlands, North Carolina.
