October 28 through November 1, 2019

Monday, October 28 – Monday, October 28, 1:00 pm – 1:00 pm, 2057 KIN—DISSERTATION DEFENSE, "Modeling Zika virus infection and pathenogenesis in neuroglia and 3D cerebral organoids," Sarah Ogden, Department of Biological science, Florida State University. Advisor: Dr. Hengli Tang.

Wednesday, October 30 – Wednesday, October 30, 12:00 pm – 12:00 pm, 1400 COM—BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES SEMINAR, "Inhibitory neurons in hypothalamus and zona incerta regulate food intake," Dr. Xiaobing Zhang, Program in Neuroscience and Department of Biomedical Sciences, Florida State University. Host: Dr. Yi Zhou, Program in Neuroscience and Department of Biomedical Sciences, Florida State University.

Wednesday, October 30 – Wednesday, October 30, 3:00 pm – 3:00 pm, 2057 KIN—DISSERTATION DEFENSE, "Cytogenetic analysis of male meiosis in Humulus lupulus L. (hop): An investigation of a highly structurally variable genome," Katherine Easterling, Department of Biological science, Florida State University. Advisor: Dr. Hank W. Bass.

Thursday, October 31 – Thursday, October 31, 9:30 am – 9:30 am, 2057 KIN—PLANT SCIENCES SEMINAR, "Academia or industry: what's best for me?," Dr. Alan Kriz, Innovation Sourcing Manager and Crop Science Lead, Bayer LifeHub Boston. Host: Dr. Hank W. Bass, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University. While the path to an academic career and criteria for success are known to most students and post-docs, the path and opportunities in the life science industries are less clear. Dr. Kriz, having worked in both areas, will join us for a moderated discussion in an attempt to demystify the biotechnology career path. Join us to ask questions or learn more about work and life in the agbiotech sector.

Thursday, October 31 – Thursday, October 31, 11:15 am – 11:15 am, 112 KLB—BIOCHEMISTRY/STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY SPECIAL SEMINAR AND KASHA AWARD PRESENTATION, "Biological physicochemistry studies of membrane proteins: from chemical probes to protein mechanism," Changlin Tian, Ph. D., School of Life Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China. The Kasha Award is given annually to recognize and stimulate research and to promote quality scientific writing. All Molecular Biophysics graduate students who are primary authors on a published paper in the past two years are eligible to be nominated by their major professors. This year's winner will be announced at the ceremony, with a special seminar presentation by 2003 MOB graduate Dr. Tian (major professor: Dr. Timothy Cross). A catered lunch will be offered in the KLB lobby following the seminar.

Thursday, October 31 – Thursday, October 31, 4:00 pm – 4:00 pm, 1024 KIN—BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE COLLOQUIUM, "Mechanics at the nuclear envelope and its associated degradation," Dr. Hong-guo Yu, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University. Host: Dr. Fanxiu Zhu, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University.

Friday, November 1 – Friday, November 1, 3:00 pm – 3:00 pm, 1400 COM—BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES DISSERTATION DEFENSE, "How differentiated cells make microtubules: a novel perinuclear microtubule-oranizing center controls nuclear positioning and collagen secretion," Yiming Zheng, Department of Biomedical Sciences, Florida State University. Host: Dr. Timothy Megraw, Program in Neuroscience and Department of Biomedical Science, Florida State University.

Friday, November 1 – Friday, November 1, 4:00 pm – 4:00 pm, 1024 KIN—ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION SEMINAR, "The extremes of mammals on Earth: elevation, density, and speciation," Dr. Scott J. Steppan, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University. Host: Dr. Sophie J. McCoy, Department of Biological Science, Florida State University.
