February 8 through February 12, 2021
Monday, February 8 – Monday, February 8, 12:00 pm – 12:00 pm, Zoom—BIO/NEURO POSTDOC WORKSHOP LECTURE AND LUNCH, "Maintaining your network in the pandemic: a discussion with Tallahassee Biotech entrepreneurs." It has been one perilous, yet never dull, year since our Postdoc Workshop: Tallahassee Biotech Panel Discussion. Several previous participants have kindly agreed to meet with us again to share how they have maintained their professional network, and their experiences of staying the course or altering their focus, during these difficult conditions. Participants include: Cesar Rodriguez of FSU COM and the Jim Moran College of Entrepreneurship; Raghuram Dhumpa, Innovatech Engineering; Jinfeng Zhang, FSU Statistics and Insilicom; Eric Graban, QuarryBio. Contact Kay Jones (kmjones@bio.fsu.edu) for Zoom link.
Monday, February 8 – Monday, February 8, 4:00 pm – 4:00 pm, Zoom—NUTRITION, FOOD, AND EXERCISE SCIENCE SEMINAR, "Translational approaches for studying the impact of foods and nutrition on cardiovascular health," Sara Johnson, Ph.D., Food Science and Human Nutrition, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO. Zoom link provided to department email list; contact Dr. Bradley Gordon (bsgordon@fsu.edu)to request link without list subscription.
Wednesday, February 10 – Wednesday, February 10, 12:00 pm – 12:00 pm, Zoom—BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE SEMINAR, "Outside the box antimicrobial-bacterial interactions," Dr. Terrence S. Crofts, Department of Biological Sciences, Northwestern University. Host: Dr. Timothy Megraw, Program in Neuroscience and Department of Biomedical Sciences, Florida State University. Join on Zoom: https://fsu.zoom.us/j/91621981985 Meeting ID: 916 2198 1985. Password required; contact ryan.teston@med.fsu.edu to request it.
Thursday, February 11 – Thursday, February 11, 3:30 pm – 3:30 pm, Zoom—EOAS SEMINAR, "Extending the heat index to quantify the physiological response to future warming," Mr. Yi-Chuan Zhuang, University of California, Berkeley, CA. From the abstract: The Heat Index is a widely used measure of apparent temperature that accounts for the effects of humidity using Steadman's model of human thermoregulation. Steadman's model, however, gives unphysical results in sufficiently hot and humid conditions, [such as those expected to] become increasingly frequent... [We extend and] map the index onto measurable quantities, including... the time it takes for the [human body] core to exceed a survivable temperature. The Heat Index is then calculated everywhere on Earth in a business-as-usual climate simulation up to the year 2300, allowing us to assess the habitability of future Earth.
