Determining your McAfee VirusScan version

The quickest way to check which version of McAfee you're using is to right click on the shield icon in your system tray and select 'about...'

This is what you'll see if you're using VirusScan 4.5.1.

This is what you'll see if you're using VirusScan Enterprise 7.x.

Determining your dat file version with McAfee 4.5.1

If you are using McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1, there should be two icons in your system tray.

Right click on the shield icon, and choose 'about'.

The 'About McAfee VirusScan' box will show the current virus definitions.

Determining your dat file version with McAfee Enterprise 7.x

If you're using McAfee Enterprise you should only have one icon in your system tray.  Right click and choose 'About VirusScan Enterprise'.

The 'About VirusScan Enterprise' box will show the current virus definitions.

Installing the superdat update for both versions

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you get a message saying you don't have permissions to run the update, reboot your computer and try again. If that doesn't work, please email me.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: We've been setting some computers to update their virusscan automatically. I don't trust this because I've seen it fail to update, but it can't hurt as long as people run the manual updates as well or check their virus definitions version and run the update if necessary. So if we've (biology computer support) worked on your computer lately and you get a message saying that your dat files are all ready up to date when running this update, that's probably why.

IMPORTANT NOTE 3: These updates are inclusive. If you didn't install the last one(s) you don't have to install them first. This one includes all the previous ones.

IMPORTANT NOTE 4: If Netscape starts but tells you it can't find the link, leave Netscape running and click the link again.

The superdat updates will work for Windows95,98,NT,2000 and XP as long as you are running McAfee VirusScan version 4.5 or greater. To find out if you are, right click on your VirusScan icon in your task bar (bottom right of computer) and choose "About". You're looking for the version at the top of the About box, next to the words "McAfee VirusScan". If your version does not qualify please contact astuy@bio.fsu.edu or burnside@bio.fsu.edu. Most of us are running version 4.5 or 4.5.1.

If you are running 4.5 or greater:

1. Double click the superdat link in the superdat email update message. Netscape or IE should start and ask you to save the file. Save it to your desktop.
2. Shut down all open applications (or at least save all work). Find the file sdatXXXX.exe on your desktop (it may not have the .exe on the end) and double click it. Then just follow the directions.
3. If asked to, reboot.
4. Delete sdatXXXX.exe, superDAT.LOG files from your desktop.

If you need a hand please email Sean (mailto:burnside@bio.fsu.edu), Andrew (mailto:arichey@bio.fsu.edu) or myself, mailto:astuy@bio.fsu.edu.
