1956 in the FSU Biological Science History project

1956 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 3 Apr 09)

In 1956, the departments of Bacteriology, Botany, Physiology, and Zoology merged to form the Department Biological Science. The new department moved from the History Building (now Williams Building) and Women's Gymnasium (now Montgomery Gym) to the General Classroom Building (now Conradi Building).

Members of the department inaugurated the Beta Beta chapter of the Phi Sigma Society, a national organization devoted to the promotion of research in the biological sciences.

Assistant professor Helen A. Denyes left to accept a position at Queen's University, Ontario.

Professor Herman Kurz retired. He had been a member of the Florida State Faculty since 1922 and had served as head of the Department of Botany and Bacteriology, then the Department of Botany, from 1940 through 1951.
Assistant professor Robert W. Rogers accepted a position elsewhere.

Mary Ann Joyner, an undergraduate biology student, and W. D. Reese, a graduate student, received award certificates for their outstanding student performance. These awards were sponsored by the Phi Sigma Society, a national organization devoted to the promotion of research in the biological sciences.
