1969 in the FSU Biological Science History project

1969 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 17 Aug 04)

On 1 June 1969, Biological Science Professor Lloyd M. Beidler received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from his alma mater, Muhlenberg College, in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

According to a 6 July 1969 article in the Tallahassee Democrat, former Biological Science faculty member George Keitt (now of Mackinac College) defeated 124 other competitors on Mackinac Island, Michigan, to win the first Stone Skipping and GePlunking open (his best stone skipped 15 times). "Ninety percent of my success is due to an astute selection of stones," he said, "and ten percent to luck." "He neglected to mention," the article continues, "that he'd been practicing for 30 years." Keitt is reported to have strapped the 75-pound Little David Flat Stone trophy to his bicycle and ridden away.

On 2 October 1969, a serious fire broke out in the Conradi Building storeroom (below room 228, the auditorium) housing the ichthyological collection. The alcohol and formalin used to preserve the specimens produced a thick black smoke that hampered firefighters' efforts and injured five firemen.
