1972 in the FSU Biological Science History project
Dr. William H. Heard was featured in an article in Florida Wildlife about invasion of Florida by the Asiatic clam Corbicula manilensis.
Six students completed their doctorates in the department in 1972: Robert W. Hastings, Michael A. Hirsch, Tom Roop, Marvin Leonard Salin, Victoria I. Sullivan, and Dwayne Allison Wise
Fifteen students completed M.S. degrees: Paterno Z. Cacho, Leonard C. Erickson, Ronald Lee Hall, Patricia C. Hayward, D. Bruce Means, T. K. Rao, Doris G. Roberds, Allan L. Rosenthal, Ruth Mason Sadler, Luis A. Soto, Jerome L. Syllivan, John Patrick Walsh, Raymond Leon Warters, Lynn Saunders Wiese, and Janet Alsup Wise. Hayward and Means maintained their ties with the department. Hayward compeleted her doctorate in education at FSU and was founding director of the Office of Science Teaching Activities. She eventually rose to the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Support under FSU Provost Lawrence G. Abele. Means completed his doctorate in Biological Science at FSU before serving as director of the nearby Tall Timbers Research Station then as an independent researcher and consultant. He has maintained a courtesy faculty appointment in the department for many years. Sadler also completed her Ph.D. She married professor A. Gib DeBusk and later became a faculty member in her own right.
A panoramic display of the development of biology at FSU was planned in conunction with the completion of the refurbishment of Conradi Building's hallways and auditorium. Old documents, photos, and teaching and research instruments were loaned by faculty for the purpose.
On a rainy morning in December of 1972, Dr. Paul R. Elliott was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on his way to his 8:00 a.m. class. Fortunately, he suffered only torn ligaments in his knee and a minor wrist fracture.
