1985 in the FSU Biological Science History project

1985 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 10 July 2009)

In 1985, the Polar Desert Research Center was formed within the department, and Professor E. Imre Friedmann became its director. In the same year, colleague H. S. Vishniac named a new species of yeast Cryptococcus friedmannii in Dr. Friedmann's honor.

In a paper published in the journal Sida, Dr. Loran Anderson named a newly discovered species in the olive family (found in Florida and South Carolina) Forestiera godfreyi (Godfrey's swamp privet) after retired FSU colleague Dr. Robert K. Godfrey.
