In 2000, an anonymous friend of Florida State University loaned seven major pieces of monumental sculpture to the university, and one of them "Zadok and Shim'on" by Boaz Vaadia was installed on the lawn between Conradi Building and Strozier Library. Dr. Anna Lerant, formerly a postdoctoral fellow in the the laboratory of Dr. Marc E. Freeman, received the "Outstanding Basic Science Teacher"award from the freshman medical class in 2000, her first year as an assistant professor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
A short article in FSU Research in Review, entitled "Gulf fish reserves set," announced the establishment of two marine reserves off the Gulf coast of Florida. These closures were based largely on research by Biological Science researchers Felicia C. Coleman and Christopher C. Koenig.
- 31 October–2 November 2000, The Third Mote International Symposium in Fisheries Ecology, "Targets, Thresholds, and the Burden of Proof," took place in Sarasota, Florida. The symposium was organized by members of the department, and the proceedings were edited here and published as a special issue of Bulletin of Marine Science.
