Wednesday, 16 August, Rockville to Tallahassee
Written 16 August 2017
Wednesday, while Rachel took us to the airport for our trip back to Tallahassee, Ev drove himself to the local emergency room, where they told him that his blood work indicated he might have a clot of some sort. The doctor sent him home with instructions that said "activities as tolerated" and reminded him to keep his appointment on Friday.
So he got out his push mower and mowed the lawn (one of his favorite activities when there's no snow to be shoveled), which had had no attention while we were travelling, then went back to the banking hassles.
On Friday, we received the news that he had gone to his regular doctor, who, after a brief exam, apparently threw his hands in the air and shouted, "They sent you home with a pulmonary embolism and told you you could go out in 90-degree heat and mow the lawn?!
Now Eve is on a six-month course of blood thinners and under what he calls "house arrest"—no bike riding, no lawn mowing, no snow shovelling, and worst of all no tennis. Since that initial sentence, the doctor has relented enough to allow brisk walking and maybe, with care, hitting a tennis ball against the wall (but no running). The hypothesis is that the clot actually formed during the flight to Europe at the beginning of the trip. Fortunately, it's small and should clear up completely under current treatment.
Back in Tallahassee, we set about doing laundry, grocery shopping, etc., in preparation for packing the car and leaving again on Saturday, 19 August, to meet the Sinnetts at Ev's brother's place in Greenville, SC, to view the solar eclipse.
