• new Professor David M. Quadagno, who transferred to Biological Science from the Department of Movement Science, where he had been a professor since 1987

• Professor Paul R. Elliott received the Student Affairs "Being There" Award.

• Professor Ralph W. Yerger received the department's Loretta C. Ellias Award for undergraduate teaching.

• Associate Professor Michael Meredith received an FSU Developing Scholar Award.

• On 22 February, professor emeritus Lutz C. Wiese died.

• On April 17, Biological Science business manager Sheila B. Lutz died suddenly. In honor of Sheila and her commitment to life-long learning, friends and coworkers established the Sheila B. Lutz Memorial Scholarship, intended to help FSU staff members working to complete their degrees while working full time.

• Dr. R. Winston Menzel, a faculty member in Biological Science and its predecessor departments from 1954 through 1966, also died in 1989. Dr. Menzel left the department in 1966 to become a member of the newly formed Department of Oceanography.
