1991 in the FSU Biological Science History project

1991 In the Department of Biological Science at Florida State University (updated 10 July 2009)

In April, friends and colleagues of then Professor Daniel Simberloff organized a quilting bee and produced a quilt commemorating the birth (in May) of his first daughter, Tander Lee Simberloff. For a fuller account, see "Quilting" on the "Traditions" page.

Near the same time, greenhouse foreman Karen Graffius and former graduate student Gail Vandekerkove organized a baby shower for Dr. Simberloff, held in the department's Conradi conference room. In keeping with the themes of biological science and baby care, the refreshments consisted of chocolate fudge, judiciously amended with edible seeds and herbs and lovingly sculpted into quite authentic-looking "traces of wildlife" (labeled by genus and species), including traces of Homo sapiens, presented in a diaper.
