- In an article entitled "Medical Ed. Seminole Style" the Fall/Winter 1998/1999 issue of FSU Research in Review marked the 28th year of FSU's Program in Medical Science, the program that, in 2001, formed the basis of FSU's newly established College of Medicine.
- In the same issue, "Metals on the Mind" detailed the work of Assistant Professor Paul Q. Trombley on the physiological roles of copper and zinc.
- 4-6 November 1998, The Second Mote International Symposium in Fisheries Ecology, "Essential Fish Habitat and Marine Reserves," took place in Sarasota, Florida. The symposium was organized by members of the department, and the proceedings were edited here and published as a special issue of Bulletin of Marine Science.
