Faculty Awards
- Professor David L. Balkwill was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
- Associate Professor Lloyd M. Epstein received the department's Loretta C. Ellias Award for undergraduate teaching.
- Associate Professor Piotr G. Fajer received an FSU University Teaching Award.
- Professor E. Imre Friedmann received the Proctor and Gamble Award in Applied and Environmental Microbiology of the American Socety for Microbiology.
- Distinguished Research Professor and Curator of Birds and Mammals Frances C. James received a Fulbright College Alumni Academy Award from the University of Arkansas, the Distinguished Alumni Award of the University of Arkansas, and an award for dedicated service as president of the American Institute of biological Sciences.
- Professor William H. Outlaw Jr. received the Distinguished Service Award of the Southern Section of the American Society of Plant Physiologists.
- Professor Robert H. Reeves received an FSU University Teaching Award.
- Associate Professor Peter C. Wainwright received one of five FSU Developing Scholar Awards.

Staff Awards
- Senior Computer Programmer-Analyst Alex Stuy received an Arts and Sciences Exemplary Service Award. In addition Alex was one of two recipients (out of 10) who won the lottery awarding $500 with which to spruce up his office space.
- Departmental editor Anne B. Thistle was among those recognized for 20 years of continuous service to the university.
Obituaries
On 29 December, Professor Emeritus and National Academy of Sciences member J. Herbert Taylor died. His long-time research associate Joan Hare compiled a large volume of letters paying tribute to his qualities as a researcher and a friend, which was presented to his widow, Shirley Hoover Taylor.
