- In May of 2006, the Robert K. Godfrey Herbarium added its 200,000th plant specimen—a buttercup species never before collected in Florida—collected by Director Emeritus Loran C. Anderson. A short story and photo appeared in State.
- 14-16 November 2006, The Sixth Mote International Symposium in Fisheries Ecology, "Life History in Fisheries Ecology and Management," took place in Sarasota, Florida. The symposium was organized by members of the department, and the proceedings were edited here and published as a special issue of Bulletin of Marine Science.
- At FSU's second annual TriBeta Honor Society Undergraduate Poster Competition, the following outstanding presentations were recognized:
- 1st Place ($75 towards the submission of Grad School/Med School application): Ms. Lisa Richey. Analysis of DNA for QTL mapping of genetic factors that control telomere length in maize. Mentor: Dr. Hank W. Bass. Department: Biological Science.
- 2nd Place ($50 towards the submission of Grad School/Med School application): Mr. Geoffery Miller. Data reduction programming—a necessary tool for research. Co-Mentors: Drs. Susanne Cappendijk and Robert Van Engelen. Department: Computational Science.
- 3rd Place (Subscription to Scientific American): Ms. Kate Beckman. Isolation and characterization of sorghum BACs for cytogenetic mapping of maize genome. Mentor: Dr. Hank W. Bass. Deparment: Biological Science.
- 4th Place (Two tickets to IMAX): Mr. James Davis. Sequence analysis of maize RFLP markers for in silico screening. Mentor: Dr. Hank W. Bass. Deparment: Biological Science.
- 5th Place (FSU Biology T-shirt): A tie between two competitors
Mr. Evan Johnson. Acute administration of 3, 4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy) in the zebra fish. Mentor: Dr. Susanne Cappendijk. Department: College of Medicine.
Ms. Stefani Norrbin. Impact on exercise on diet-induced obesity in female rats. Mentor: Dr. Lisa Eckel. Department: Psychology.
