2006 in the FSU Biological Science History project
In January, Associate Scholar Scientist in Biological Science Felicia C. Coleman was appointed director of Florida State's Edward Ball Marine Laboratory, at Turkey Point in Franklin County.

Departures
- Professor John S. Elam retired after 35 years in the department.
- Assistant Professor Thomas F. Hansen left during the spring semester to accept a position at the University of Oslo, in his native Norway.
- Research Associate Antonieta Labra Lillo left during the spring semester to accompany Dr. Hansen in his move to Norway.
- Postdoctoral investigator Kevin C. Rowe left Dr. Steppan's laboratory in July.
- Senior Lab Technician Kevin Haight left Dr. Tschinkel's laboratory (where he also earned a master's degree) in July.
- Laboratory technician Katie McAlister left Dr. Inouye's and Dr. Underwood's labs in July.
- Office Assistant Cyndi Harlow left the Conradi Clerical Office in January to accept another postion with the university.
- Eric Strait, head accountant in the department's Conradi Fiscal Office, left in March to accept a position in at Emory University.
- Gustavo Garrido, grant specialize in the department's Conradi Fiscal Office, left in July to accept another position on campus.
- Wilma Smith, of the department's Conradi Fiscal Office, left in May to accept a position elsewhere in Tallahassee.

Obituaries
- Paul Kanciruk, 58, a retired marine biologist, died Friday, 10 February, 2006. A student of Dr. William F. Herrnkind, Paul received his doctorate in biology in 1976. Obituary.
- Kathleen Allison Craddock Burks, a botanist and project coordinator for Florida Natural Areas Inventory, died Thursday, 8 June 2006, at her home, after an all too brief struggle with cancer. A student of Dr. Loran C. Anderson, Kathy got her M.S. in the department in 1992 and remained a research associate of FSU's Robert K. Godfrey Herbarium until her death. Memorial contributions can be made to the Robert K. Godfrey Endowment Fund, Fund No. 0303, FSU Foundation, P.O. Box 3062739, Tallahassee, FL 32306. Obituary.
- Dr. David C. White, a microbiologist who was a member of the department from 1973 through 1984, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on 25 October 2006 in Knoxville, Tennessee, where he was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee and a distinguished scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
