Sexual Reproduction
(click on underlined terms to go to glossary)

Plants have alternation of generations as their sexual life cycle.

Plants are embryophytes, meaning they have internal fertilization. In contrast, fertilization occurs externally in most simpler photoautotrophs. A multicellular haploid organism produces gametes by mitosis. The zygote (2N) is formed by union of gametes. The zygote develops into the sporophyte (2N), which produces spores (N) meiotically. The spores, in turn, give rise to the haploid phase to complete the cycle.
