1974 in the FSU Biological Science History project
In January, in response to a storm of protest, BioNotes, discontinued just four weeks earlier as a cost-cutting measure, was reinstituted.
On Wednesday, 16 January, in Opperman Music Hall, Dr. Detlev W. Bronk, president emeritus of Rockefeller University, gave the first annual Bartram Lecture, "The spiritual and social significance of science." The Bartram Lecture series was inaugurated by the Department of Biological Science (with financial assistance from the Psychobiology Program) to honor naturalist William Bartram (1729-1823).
Dr. A. Gib DeBusk hosted a departmental outing at his home on Lake Jackson that featuredvolleyball, horseshoes, swimming, king mackeral, and hush puppies.
The departmental intramural softball team, the Seminole Vesicles, was undefeated as of late April. The team included Mike Kurek, Ken Heck, Mark Latch, and Jackie Matustik.

- new Associate Professor and Curator of the Herbarium Loran C. Anderson
- new Assistant Professor Louis St. Petery
- new Temporary Assistant Professors Lynne Eddy and Lloyd Wolfinbarger
- Neal Weber, retired from . . ., arrived to become an adjunct professor of the department. He moved into the apartment over the Mission Road greenhouse facility.
- Beth Carruth joined the staff of the Conradi Clerical Office.
Departures
- Dr. Robert K. Godfrey, Professor and Curator of the Herbarium, retired, although he remained active in scientific research for many years. He died in early 2000. In 2001, Dr. William F. Herrnkind honored his late colleage by becoming the Robert K. Godfrey Professor of Biological Science, and in 2002 the herbarium was renamed in Dr. Godfrey's honor.
- Associate Professor Horace Loftin left to accept another position.
- Associate Professor Charles Stasek left to accept a position at the Friday Harbor Laboratories of the University of Washington.
- H. Winter Griffith, Associate Director of Clinical Affairs in the Program in Medical Sciences, left the university.
- Terry Ayala left her position in the Conradi Clerical Office. She could not immediately be replaced because of a hiring freeze.
Awards
Faculty Awards
- Professor Lloyd M. Beidler was elected to the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
- Dr. Harry Lipner received a Fulbright Lectureship to the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore.
- Kenneth E. Penrod and Lloyd M. Beidler received special awards for outstanding contributions to the Program in Medical Sciences
- Dr. Marc E. Freeman was elected to full membership in the American Physiological Society.
Student Awards
- Charlene Reed was awarded a Sigma Xi Grant-in-Aid of Research for her project "Functional cilia of scallop gills."
- Octavious McGill (Lake City, Florida) received the Program in Medical Sciences Mosby Book Award
- Frank C. Walker, Jr. (Albany, Georgia), received the Program in Medical Sciences Lange Book Award
- Anne Louise Lowell (Ormond Beach, Florida) and Janice Sue Wilson (Bartow, Florida) received the Program in Medical Sciences Capital Medical Society Auxiliary Award
- Octavious McGill and Winfred Parnell (Lake City, Florida) received the Program in Medical Sciences FAMU Award
- Sharon Dillingham Martin (Tallahassee, Florida) received the Program in Medical Sciences Emanuel Suter Award
