- Professor Paul R. Elliott was named Zeta Tau Alpha Faculty Member of the Year.
- Professor William F. Herrnkind received the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Teaching Award.
- Professor Kurt G. Hofer received FSU's Ross Oglesby Award for Scholarship and Leadership and was named an FSU Distinguished Teaching Professor.
- Professor and Curator of Birds and Mammals Frances C. James received the Elliott Coues Award of the American Ornithologists' Union, for meritorious research contributions.
- Professor David M. Quadagno received Best Professor Award of the the Phi Eta Sigma National Freshman Honor Society.
- Professor Thomas M. Roberts received the department's Loretta C. Ellias Award for undergraduate teaching.
- Professor Robert B. Short was named a Distinguished Emeritus Member by the American Society of Parasitologists.
- Professor Joseph Travis received an FSU University Teaching Award and was elected vice-president of the American Society of Naturalists.
- Professor Theodore P. Williams received an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Fellowship for study in Germany.

- Long-time departmental shop staff member Fred Jordan received the Gabor FSU Employee of the Year Award
Obituaries
- Dr. Loretta C. Ellias, Associate Professor Emerita, died on 21 April. She was a member of the department from 1946 until her retirement in 1987. Dr. Ellias's dedication to undergraduate teaching is commemorated in the department's Loretta C. Ellias Teaching Award, first conferred in 1988.
